It was in harmony with the environment. However, in the 18th-century things changed. Trading increased and many new immigrants arrived. As a result, Matera became overpopulated and thus began the breakdown of its sustainability. By the 1940s, thousands were living in atrocious conditions in the Sassi. Harrowing footage at Casa Noha, showed families cramped together with their animals. Disease was rife due to the lack of running water and heating. The infant mortality rate was a heartbreaking fifty per cent. Fortunately, in the early 1950s, Matera's plight became public. This was largely due to the influential writings of author Carlo Levi. He had visited the Sassi di Matera and was horrified at the living conditions. This sparked a reaction within the media and Matera became known as 'The Shame of Italy'. Politicians finally began to take an interest in the plight of the Sassi di Matera. In 1952, the government ordered that the Sassi homes were unfit for human habitation. They moved about 15, 000 of the population to new quarters, located in the more modern part of Matera.
Cheltenham began as a small agricultural settlement and by the Middles Ages was a town with a population of only a few hundred, growing to maybe 1500 people by the seventeenth century. Everything changed in the early eighteenth century when locals noticed that in a field south of the town, pigeons would gather and peck at the salt deposits around a spring. Soon the locals starting drinking the spring water in the belief that it was a cure for illness and the fame of the waters spread. A pump room and places for people to gather were built, and more wells were established. After King George III visited with his family to take the waters in 1788 the town flourished. Cheltenham's population soared during the first half of the nineteenth century and a significant amount of civic building took place. The town also became famous for education. Cheltenham College opened in 1841 and is still a leading independent school. The University of Gloucestershire has its roots in many further and higher education institutions that over the years have merged and been re-named.
